Reflections on the Leadership Team Retreat (June 2014)

TCM Student Leadership Team Retreat
June 27-29, 2014
At Indian Creek Campground and Conference Center
Tecumseh, Ohio

An incredible weekend was had by all!  I was amazed at the 13Group 2014 student leadership team members who were able to work their busy schedules so that they could join me at a camp for group building adventure and planning for the fall.  Thirteen of the 14 leaders were able to get away for this out-door experience.

We cooked over an open fire, slept in cabins, jumped on an inflated trampoline, zipped down a zip-line and some of them jumped off the “Leap of Faith”!  The morning was designated for “Group Build
ing” which was overseen by Jon Schoonmaker, a licensed professional counselor, who led us in physical and mental experiences that challenged our communication, problem solving and physical skills.  It was intense.

The evening was dedicated to planning the TCM Theme for the year (“Oh God, send your light and truth – those will guide me” from Ps 43:3) and made ambitious plans for the fall.  We actually will begin our fall schedule a week before classes start with daily activities here at the Ark and on campus.

zip line prep     Below are some of the student’s reflections on the weekend:

“One of my favorite was the team building activities that we did in the pavilion. It was great to see how well we worked with each other. It was especially great to work with those who are new to TCM’s leadership team. One activity that really stuck out was listing our group’s strong and weak points. I really hope that this year we are able to improve on some of those “negative” things.”  –  Keesha Lane, Senior from Detroit majoring in Psychology.

“It just helped all us to not be so stressed out, to act like kids again. TCM is a great group.”  Meghan Chu, Vice-President for Funds Development from Toledo.strengths and weaknesses

“I felt this past weekend was not only beneficial for the group as a whole but also to my Christian walk and the mission of TCM. It was so refreshing to get away with the team and concentrate on this coming year.” – Kalee Royster, a sophomore majoring in Bio-Chemical Engineering from Freemont, Ohio.

“As a first year member and new leader for TCM, I was ecstatic to participate in the retreat held at I ndian Creek, Tecumseh, Michigan.  Not only did I have a fun weekend beyond my expectations, but I learned more about the other leaders on the leadership team, as well as myself.  Working as a team can be rough at times, even for groups of Christians like ourselves.  I truly believe that this retreat set us all on the right path (God’s path!) to becoming closer with each other as the year progresses. I am happy to be a member of TCM and even happier to be serving on the leadership team with my classmates, for my classmates.”    –     Lucy Frank, K-Group Leader, a sophomore studying Political Science from Wauseon, Ohio.

“By going to the retreat I got a chance to make bonds and get closer to members of TCM that I didn’t know. I learned a lot on the retreat. I learned that I can achieve dreams and aspirations I may have for myself; I just have to stay focused and think positive.” – Crystal Dubose, a sophomore from Detroit majoring in Early Childhood Education.

We are so blessed to have such committed and strong leaders!  Look for more great experiences from these incredible young adults!
